Post Traumatic Stress Disorder more commonly known as Shell Shock is a reaction that occurs when a person, in the case of the term shell shock, a solder is exposed to stimuli that cause more stress than the mind can take. Only recently has this condition been identified as anything other than cowardice. As recently as WWI this extreme toll on the mind has been pushed to the side and seen as a solder trying to get out of fighting, and even toward the end of the war when Shell Shock was being treated by therapy it still was not very wildly excepted as most people were not swayed to the side of not seeing it as cowardice. Some common symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are Persistent reexperience which takes form in reoccurring nightmares, and flashbacks. These symptoms can do as small of a thing as harden a man to watching human suffering, to completely shattering his mind leaving him forever lost in his own mind. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder had such a huge toll on society after the First World War that it even appears in literary works such as regeneration. "I wonder why? I mean i can quite see the sight of me in a post-mortem apron might not be to everybody’s taste-"(pg:29, Line 9) was what a patient named Anderson said about one of his reoccurring nightmares, which would make the hair on the back of any man's neck stand up and show that he although seemingly fine is battling with Shell Shock. This research has at least has helped me understand the hell that these men have went through and enabled me to understand more of their deep emotional troubles.
